New tool matches your skills to jobs
Are you an education or career professional? Click here to learn more.
Throughout life — from school, hobbies, volunteering, jobs, and more — we all gain skills. No matter your age, you have things that you know how to do. Your skills are an important factor when you are looking for a new job.
First, you have to understand how the skills you have make you a good job candidate. This can be hard, especially if they seem to be unrelated. For example, maybe you have experience as a housekeeper, but want to start working in manufacturing. You might think that these jobs have nothing in common.
Through a partnership with the Brattleboro Development Credit Corporation, MyFutureVT has a new tool called Vermont Employment Pathfinder. Vermont Employment Pathfinder helps you to identify the skills you have and directs you to relevant education and employment opportunities.
You start by creating a profile that you can save and go back to. The site asks you about things you have done, like jobs or hobbies. Then, it asks you about tasks or actions that you did during those experiences. The tool looks at those skills, and what you’re interested in doing, and matches you up with current job openings in Vermont.
A housekeeper might have skills like: time management, safely lifting heavy objects, following instructions, efficiency, working under a deadline, managing a schedule, managing hazardous materials, and process improvement. All of these skills make them a good candidate for a manufacturing job.
If you’re missing a lot of skills for a job you want, it will show you what you need to learn to become a better candidate. It also suggests relevant education programs to learn new skills or boost existing ones. The housekeeper looking for a manufacturing job may be directed to a certified production technician program.
If you’re a good fit for a job and you’re interested in applying, Vermont Employment Pathfinder will generate a resume (called a CV on the site) that highlights your most relevant skills for that job.
If you are looking for a personalized tool to guide you through your job search, Vermont Employment Pathfinder is a great place to start. Anyone can use Vermont Employment Pathfinder, for free, through MyFutureVT.
