Licensed Nursing Assistant (LNA) | License

The LNA Training Program is approved by the Vermont Board of Nursing and prepares adults to pass the Vermont approved exam required to obtain a license as a nursing assistant in Vermont. The course focuses on the essentials of safe and effective practices for care in a healthcare facility setting. Students will learn the basics of assisting patients, body mechanics, ethics and communication.

The program will be: 80 hours of classroom/lab instruction delivered on-site and in a nursing facility.

This program includes the following credential(s): Licensed Nursing Assistant (LNA).

EPA Refrigerant Handling | Certification

This course is usually offered once per year. If you do not see program information posted, contact the center for details about when it will be offered next.

This 21 hour refrigerant certification course will include the areas outlined below and will prepare you to successfully pass four areas of certification. They are:

  • EPA ACT 608 Certifications for Servicing Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Systems
  • Type 1 – Servicing Small Appliances
  • Type 2 – High-Pressure Appliances
  • Type 3 – Low-Pressure Appliances

This program includes or prepares for the following credential(s): EPA Act 608 Safe Refrigerant Handling Certification.

Type S Electrical Preparation | License

The 30 hour Type-S Electrical Preparation course is an excellent way to help you study and prepare to take the certification exam required for Type-S Journeyman Electrical licensure.

This course is:

  • approved for 8 hours of required continuing education for A1 (automatic gas/oil heating) and C3 (refrigeration or air conditioning) licenses.
  • does not meet or replace the initial licensure requirements defined by the Electrical Board and the Department of Fire Safety.
  • does not replace the requirements listed on the Electricians’ License Application Instructions.

This program includes or prepares for the following credential(s): Type-S Journeyman Electrician License.

Fundamentals of Natural Gas | Certification

This course is usually offered multiple times per year. If you do not see program information posted, contact the center for details about when it will be offered next.

This 30 hour course focuses on subjects critical to ensuring the safe and efficient use of natural gas. The subjects will be presented through lectures, videos, demonstrations, and weekly tests.

This course is not a hands-on course designed to train students to become service technicians, therefore students should have related field experience.

Radiology for Dental Assistants | Certification

This course is designed to prepare dental assistants for an endorsement in radiology in the dental office.

Emphasis is placed on understanding and practicing the essentials of radiographic clinical procedures.

You will be required to attend:

  • Lecture Session (7 hours) This lecture session will cover theory and techniques used in exposing dental radiographs.
  • Preclinical Session (4 hours)
  • Clinical Session (2 hours) During this session student will: expose a complete FMX on a patient (student`s responsibility to provide a patient), take a written dental radiography exam (must achieve 80% to pass course), and take a clinical test out with a grade of 80% or higher.

This program includes or prepares for the following credential(s): Dental Assistants, Radiographic Endorsement.

Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning, Refrigeration | Certification

Students will learn the theory and skills necessary to begin a HVACR career and/or continue postsecondary training. Students will master a variety of entry-level HVACR skills as they relate to residential and commercial settings. Students will participate in a variety of lab activities to reinforce the attainment of technical skills. The subjects will be presented through lectures, videos, demonstrations, and hands-on lab activities. The program will be taught as a sequence of courses and students are expected to enroll in all courses. Individual courses may be taken on a space available basis, but students enrolling in all four courses are preferred. All courses are taught by experienced professionals in the field.

The total program is 28 weeks (168 hours) and is divided into four separate courses. Courses and content:

  • Tools and Applications: Tools, fasteners, tubing, copper, and soldering/brazing.
  • Heating Systems: Ductwork, customer relations, heat pumps, and the following heating systems: gas, oil, and electric.
  • Electricity and Motor Controls: Electrical principles, motors, electrical control devices, and defrost cycles.
  • Cooling and Refrigeration: Thermodynamic principles, the relationship of temperature and pressure, system components, refrigerants, service procedures (recovery/recycling, evacuation, leak detection, charging), metering devices, troubleshooting, compressors, compressor service, and chillers.

The courses in the program are ideal for students who are motivated to enter the HVACR field and/or continue to postsecondary training with Vermont State University. All students that successfully complete the program will be referred for employment interviews with one or more partners. HVACR technicians are in high demand and starting wages, with this program, are approximately $20 – 25/hour.

Students have the option of receiving college credit at Vermont State University for an associate degree.

Expanded Functions Dental Assisting | Certification

The program provides didactic instruction, laboratory and clinical exercises for advanced operative procedures. The following seven weeks of instruction at the Center for Technology, Essex will consist of 98 hours of didactic instruction and 87 hours of laboratory practical experience before performing required clinical competencies under the direct supervision of the sponsoring dentist. The EFDA student’s externship will be with the sponsoring dentist or associates in practice if a primary dentist is unavailable. A final bench test will be administered using the Commission on Dental Competency Assessments criteria, formerly known as NERB.
