Sustainable Trail Building | Certificate

Vermont State University

Participants must be at least 18 years old.

Description

The one-year online and in-person Sustainable Trail Building Certificate program offers a unique opportunity to jump-start a career as a trail professional through a flexible, part-time program of study. Gain the education and skills needed to learn safe, effective, and ecologically focused trail design and construction techniques. The program is designed to help future trail builders enter a career in this growing field to build better, maintain, plan, and manage essential corridors connecting users to natural, cultural, and historical spaces.

The program is taught through a combination of online, classroom, and in-the-field learning. Tuition includes trail passes to Kingdom Trails and Burke Mountain Bike Park vouchers. Bunk house accommodation is available at no additional cost for participants coming from a distance for in-person class dates.

This program generally runs from September to September, with three in-person weeklong sessions throughout. Two sessions are held in the fall and one in the spring. Visit the program page for specific timing information. In addition, participants take part in a paid 100-hour Trailship program with a professional trail organization during the summer to apply their new skills in a real-world setting.
